The reason why Linux was created, was to have a OS that could be freely distributed without the restrained efforts of big corporations to not allow modification to the source code. Linux is open source AKA free software. It's the second most used OS in the world. It was not designed specifically for hacking but it is useful for it and more easily done so on Linux.
