You can’t open a “terminal” (a command-line emulator in a graphical environment) but you can boot straight into the Command Line interface. You’ll need to edit the boot flags in GRUB (the bootloader). Press e while still in GRUB and you’ll have the option to edit the boot flags for the kernel. Add a “1″ to the end. This will boot the computer in Single-User mode. Be careful, you’re now root. Use the shutdown command to turn the computer off when you’re done.

Try pressing the Crtl and Alt and any of the F keys from 1-8 at the same time. THat should open a terminal but you will have to log in to use it.
Good luck
