Installing Fedora Linux on Mac OS X with vmware Fusion

Posted on 12 March 2010 by Abidoon

One of my classes this term involves scripting. We’ve moved on from Windows and are now concentrating on UNIX. The machines in the labs run Fedora for this purpose. Rather than use their systems and deal with those headaches, I prefer to use my own notebook. Boot Camp and vmware Fusion were required because of an earlier course in which I needed to use Cisco’s Packet Tracer, which according to their site is only available for Windows and Linux. I figured Fedora would be just as easy, so I embarked on this journey. Before installing Fedora, I did some research looking for an installation guide. I found one website that was a little bit helpful, but not extremely useful. As a consequence, I’ve made this video in order to help anyone in a similar situation. I’m filtering comments to keep out clowns who want to bash operating systems and get into flame wars. If you would like to engage in that sort of idiocy, go somewhere else.

    lol Thanks.

I’ve thought about redoing this thing with screen record in Quicktime X after I upgraded to Snow Leopard, but then I decided this was good enough for government work.

Where did you get your iso file? The only thing I can think of is that it is either a bad iso file or that it wasn’t burned properly.

A few weeks ago I was able to download a free iso of Windows XP from my university. Using that, I didn’t even have to worry about burning that iso file onto a CD or DVD. When I went through to install the virtual machine, I just selected the iso file that was stored in my hard drive. I would suggest doing that rather than mess with burning discs.

I originally went with Boot Camp because I thought I wanted to boot up in Windows. Eventually, I came to the point where that was annoying. Also, losing 30 of disc space to a Windows partition was starting to annoy the shit out of me.

So, I deleted the Boot Camp partition and installed both XP and Vista as VMs. What VMWare does is expand the size of the VM file as needed. So now, these two Windows VMs, and also a Linux VM, take up less disc space than one Boot Camp partition.

It is really all about preference. Either install is easy and will work great. You just have to decide whether you’re going to want to boot up straight into Windows, or if you’re only going to want to run Windows occasionally for a few programs.

If the latter, I suggest installing VMWare and then installing Windows as a VM through VMWare. If you have some resource intensive applications that you’re going to be running on Windows, such as photo editing, go with Boot Camp.
