Setting up File Sharing Between Windows, Linux, and Macs with Samba!
Posted on 15 March 2010 by Abidoon
This tutorial will show you how to use Samba to share a directory on your Linux machine across your network, accessible by Windows, Linux, and Mac machines. The process takes less than five minutes, and by the end you should immediately see the file server through browsing your Windows network. (This and more at www.linuxhaxor.net) This is not the most secure way to share files via Linux (but you can configure Samba for greater security), and is suitable for a home network without unwanted guests. Hi NixiePixel, hope you are well. Thank you for this tutorial.
very nice tutorial…..
thanks
@jerryh9770 Oh yes I will ! =D
gadmin can save you the effort to go through all this.
But somehow it is good to console mode every now and then…
lol you wasted your chance – she was offline compiling kernel when you proposed
@spartan2600 This is only one way of doing this.
(And it is only one file and most of the command lines could be done in GUI, but it’s not as easy and fast to do)
You should never, ever set chmod 777 on a file or directory. You only need chmod 755 (rwxr-xr-x)
I prefer using this instead of octal numbers:
chmod a+rx /myshare
for all add read and execute rights (acces to directory)
i can only get internet on Ubuntu if i connect with a cord…
Will you marry me?
what a load of crap. ubuntu has come a long way, but the way filesharing is, its stuck in 1995, and hasn’t improved. i don’t want to slog through 5 cunting config files, and 20 different console commands to transfer one file.
man y do people keep saying ur cute and haveing sex wit u this is a tech tutorial
Nice lecture Nixie… (Though you were nicer than the lecture) I need a bit of help. How can I set my ubuntu machine to join a AD Domain Contoller. I have used Likewise-open to join AD and successfully done so. I can log on to the ubuntu machine using my AD user name and password. But how can I setup samba to allow the access to my samba shares to specific users from Active Directory? Any help would be appreciated.
ok i think i got it
thanx anyway
you’re still cute…
how do i share folders through network and make them accessible to certain user using password?
p/s: you’re cute~
I could imagine how funny it’d be to make love with this girl while she’s explaining you how to setup a print server over 3 different platforms while staying on the top of yours xxx
you can also type “testparm” (after /etc/init.d/samba restart) this will dump your SAMBA service definitions on terminal and your shared folders
lol that was sexy at the end it would of worked on me for sure. love the vids keep em up 5/5
Nixie is the best.
(P.S. your lipstick reminds me somewhat at Robert Smith)
im using ubuntu 9.10 karmic koala and i stream media to my xbox 360 i have seen a video on you tube streaming zsnes but they were using windows media center do you know a way i can stream zsnes with ushare on ubuntu?
Rational. Yesh1
Nothing better than getting exellent information from a smokin hot Geekett:) I sure hope this works on my Ubuntu laptop tonight.
Thanks a lot
Thanks Nixie, this was helpful.
(P.S. My gf gets jealous whenever I watch your vids LOL)
