DV8T Linux Build Ramblings
Posted on 17 July 2010 by Abidoon
Sorry, a lot rambling! I talk a lot about the different flavors of Linux I am trying out on my HP dv8t, NVidia beta drivers vs. Nouveau Drivers, and complain a lot about the old days of Red Hat… Please excuse ramble about Fedora. I am really impressed with Fedora. I was really complaining about the old days when Red Hat used to send you a crippled OS that took forever to install and then you had to download a Gig of updates to make it “usable”. BTW, I haven’t looked at Debian recently, and the last time I did, I had issues… so I base my comments on those days long ago. TELL ME WHAT FLAVOR YOU THINK IS STABLE, YET CUTTING EDGE. ENJOY!!

Has Das gone over to the dark side? Please tell me it isn’t so!
ahahhahaha Das.. i’ve only just noticed the subtitles are fucked…… funny as hell!
“and I know that the colenel….. and following a new grub thats out there…. he is completely, open sewers drivers. ahahahaahahha. funny shit
G’day mate.
Arch has been my choice in Linux for a good while now, although I’m not really a power user, I have become comfortable with it’s way of doing things. For UVC based Cams, I use guvcview and have had no problems to date.
Good to see you back, DasGregor!!
I’m finding Pidgin, Kopete and the like are all dropping webcam support. Skype still works pretty darn good for conferencing. Been a while since I tried Cheese in KDE.
I’m using the Kubuntu 10.04 it is very buggy, but it seems the easiest for finding what I’m looking for.
I did something in Gentoo when I tried to use the nouveau drivers and now Cheese doesn’t work, I’ve been building and rebuilding all week. I just can’t seem to get a stable system with my new hardware.
I tried VLC when I first started making Youtube videos. If you look at my very first linux created video’s you’ll see how poor the quality and the static at the bottom of the video looks. That’s VLC. I’ve read that kdenlive should work, but pulse audio needs removed to make it work. I have a feeling that Pulse is the new audio management for linux, so I think kdenlive needs to learn to support it.
It took me a short hour or so to figure Arch out. I had to use two computers to get the info I needed. I probably shouldhave tried it in a VirtualBox first. pacman isn’t as user friendly as emerge, but I’m getting used to it.
I’m too lazy to stay clean shaven for long. I’ve had a beard since I was 19, and it’ll probably be back soon.
Linux Mint is awesome for newbies, I agree about Fedora… they should make it more user friendly, the thing that annoys me about fedora is their obsessive FOSS only approach even if it doesn’t work well…. Im too lazy to learn Gentoo at the moment, lol. I have a friend who loves it….. so yeah… I like Arch with Kde, and Ubuntu for Gnome….. I like the direction Canonical is headed with what is going on at the moment
hey Das… Have you Tried VLC for webcam capture? havn’t tried it myself but I heard it works well….
As for Distro preferences, I really Like ArchLinux (kdemod)
But when im feeling lazy I like using Ubuntu (gnome), OpenSuse is rock solid but Yast2 is still slow with package management and is annoying… Kubuntu is getting better but is quite buggy I find… and they release testing software as default! ugh! Mandriva goes alright, but not a big fan of their gui package manager either… slow
ahahhaha. i sent that comment before i heard you mention it in your video. lol
You should grow your beard back man…. it suited you. hehe
