How To INSTALL Linux (Backtrack) In A Virtual Machine – Part 1

Posted on 15 July 2010 by Abidoon

This tutorial shows how to INSTALL Backtrack 4 to a VMDK (Virtual Machine Disk) in VMWare Player or VMWare Workstation along with VMWare Tools.. These steps can be used to install any Linux OS or even Windows OS. Keep in mind, this isn’t the same as referencing an ISO directly but rathering installing the OS as you would on your hard-drive while still remaining Virtual. I also go over how to change your resolution in Backtrack, login as a root user, and install VMWare Tools. LINKS: Backtrack 4 Download: www.backtrack-linux.org VMWare Player: www.filehippo.com Enjoy :)

I’m using the VM-image and log-in with root and then do the steps you told me
Go to K Menu -> Settings -> System Administration -> User Management
but there isn’t a user management tab.
I also did the one in the video using the backtrack iso image and got the same result.
In your video you’re on a desktop pc.
    is this a requirement?

Any reason as to why it doesn’t save my network interface config? Every time on startup I have to set eth0 to up and use dhclient.

A question for you. For some reason, my vmware can’t find the wireless adapter. I’m using intel 5100. I try to add it from virtual machine setting. But it can’t find it.

    - Go to K Menu -> Settings -> System Administration -> User Management
    - Click on Administrator Mode (Enter in your current password)
    - Select New and proceed with creating the desired user-account. Close out when done.
    - Open a Terminal (Shell) window and tpye: kdesu konqueror
    - Enter / as the location and Right-Click on the Home directory -> Properties -> Permissions and grant View/Modify to Group/Other
