It depends on what you want to use it for and what your general knowledge of Linux is. If you are new to Linux, I would advise you to use a distro such as Ubuntu instead, as the community support for Ubuntu is very good, which will make it easier for you to find help when you need it. If you are not new to Linux, I would advise Debian, Slackware or Fedora for example.
yes, its excellent to use! I currently use Mint Linux (64bit) (based off Ubuntu), and I love it. But, i also have Fedora installed on another hard-drive attached to my pc, and i multi-boot whenever I just want a change of scenery. Mint is faster though, especially for loading web pages, at least on my computer.
I thoroughly recommend Linux Mint 8 Main Edition which is built upon Ubuntu 9.10 Its easy to install and easy to use plus it comes with much of the software you are likely to need preinstalled

good luck.
fedora needs an above average knowledge of linux, its very good but also a little limited,
please be aware that there are no proprietry software for fedora, it uses free and open source only

having said that its the second most used linux distribution,
personaly i suggest, if you are a new linux user, go for a distro that has proprietry software included,
pclinuxos or mandriva are 2 that do
ya Fedora and Ubuntu are the best and always updated
