Review – Mandriva Linux 2010 – Part 1/2
Posted on 14 July 2010 by Abidoon
Mandriva Linux is a fine beginner Linux Distro and I think it combines a nice mix of reasonably cutting edge applications, stability and polish all together to make one brilliant Linux distribution. This video looks at: Installation Initial Configuration Default Application Set Update Manager Article: techsnap.co.uk

@WhatTheFeather Windows Movie Maker on Windows and KDEnlive on Linux.
What do u use to edit your vids?
Mandriva is not more cutting edge than ubuntu .
Newer ubuntu versions use very updated software but the point is you dont get much updates .
@TheGamingneeds You should use CrossOver Linux on your laptop for the games, and all the other stuff should work fine.
my mandriva live cd doesn’t get to the installation part like in 0:42
it just stays at a blank black screen. :S
@freaks182 He wants to play games Linux is pointless he may as well just use Virtualbox if he wants to use Linux for a couple of apps.
@TheGamingneeds If you try ubuntu, or linux mint, they boot off of live cds. So after you burn it you can put it into your cd drive and test it to see how it works. from my personal experience linux is alot faster than windows, and also alot more stable. as for games thoguh it is lacking.
@Techsnap or do what I’ve always done, keep Windows around for games I want to play that aren’t Linux compatable, then use Linux for everything else.
I love mandriva! Awesome OS~
@TheGamingneeds split your hard drive make a partition for windows so you can play your games and the other use for a linux distribution, friend of mine does that
The best Linux FPS is Urban Terror.
@TheGamingneeds If you’re a gamer, just stick with Windows since you should use the right tool for the right job. If you want to try Linux though, Google Virtualbox and install it using that.
@Techsnap i have windows 7, im a gamer and im considering installing Linux. what do you think ? it looks like it is lagging a little, maybe its because you’re shooting but i don’t know. help please
What? I’m talking about building .debs for redistributing not installing them, you’re describing installing a .deb file with a system that has gdebi installed.
@Techsnap
With debs you just double click them and then press OK, a GUI does the work for you.
I prefer RPMs over DEBs, for one they’re easier to build.
Running Mandriva One now. Only negatives, no progress bars etc when its resizing partitions, so if you’re not sure about Linux you may think it has stalled, it hasn’t. I’ve never used an RPM based distro before, always been apt-get debs etc, so this is really nice, and the rpms so far are installing very easily. Havn’t touched the command line once so far.
Mandriva!! I’ve always liked this distro for it’s simple layout, support for 3rd party video cards & mp3 playback out of the box.
The Mandriva powerpack is great for newcomers who don’t want hassles.
1. When installing, does it give you the option to not install a bootloader?
2. Don’t the LY say you only need to restart for kernel updates?
I tried Spring 09 a few months ago. This one looks like it’s made a lot of improvements. I’ll have to try it out.
I enjoyed the vid
I will show the “Configure Your Computer” program in the next video. It really has some nice tools for configuring the system.
The install was done just clicking next and keeping the defaults.
Doesn’t seem hard for newcomers. :p
I like the distro, I think it’s brilliant, It’s multi part so there will be more of it soon.
If thats the case no os is for starters. As every os gives you options to tweak and toy with. Even Ubuntu and Windows .
I was wondering when you were gonna review this distro, nice vid.
